WG5: High impact weather prediction & predictability (joint WG with THORPEX)

    General objective

    Improving our knowledge and understanding of high impact weather.

    This WG is concerned with improving our knowledge and understanding of high impact weather in different regions: (i) over the West African continent (e.g. intense rainfall events, onset and duration of dry/wet spells), (ii) the downstream tropical Atlantic (e.g. tropical cyclone intensity change and genesis) and (iii) the extratropics. In addition to addressing key science issues related to the nature and predictability of these high impact weather events, additional operational activities will be promoted.

    This WG will be particularly concerned with addressing the sciences issues raised at the regional and mesoscale (Sections 3.2.2 and 3.2.3 of ISP).

    General activities

      • Weather system predictability (e.g. dry spell, monsoon onset, extreme rainfall event and flashfloods);
      • development of targeted observing strategies;
      • Tailoring and evaluation of forecast products in tropical regions;
      • data impact studies;
      • Reanalysis;
      • Tropical cyclogenesis and intensity change;
      • Extratropical transition of tropical cyclones and
      • Rossby wave trains from Africa.
