WG1: West African monsoon and Global Climate including aerosols and chemistry

    General objective

Improvement of our understanding of the WAM system and the mutual interaction with the global climate, in order to evaluate and improve climate predictions and the understanding of impacts related to the WAM.

The two-way interactions between the West African Monsoon (WAM) and the rest of the globe are important for determining the variability of the WAM and its global impacts. The aim of this working group is to better understand and predict the multi-scale variability of the aspects of global climate linked to the WAM. This WG will be particularly concerned with addressing the sciences issues raised at the global, regional and meso scales ( Sections 3.2.1, 3.2.2 3.2.3 of ISP )

    General activities

      • Understanding of the WAM system dynamics and its interactions with aerosol and chemistry,
      • Intra-seasonal-to-decadal WAM variability and predictability,
      • Impacts of the WAM on global climate,
      • Past and future climate change.

    Remarks

The evaluation and the improvement of climate models are dealt by CC1. As suggested during the Dakar conference in 2005, this WG could be subdivided in two parts (i.e. WG1a & WG1b) to better organize and highlight the aerosol/chemistry component.
