CC2: Long Term Observations, concerning EOP 2007, LOP and satellite products

    General objective

    To contribute to the long term strategy for climate and environmental monitoring of the West Africa region.

    Beyond the central requirement of providing adequate data sets for the AMMA science (SOP), the enhancement of existing monitoring is necessary (See ISP and IIP).
    The Long term Observing Period (LOP, 2001-2010) is concerned with the operational observations covering the regional scale and additional specific observations on the mesoscale and local sites. The objective is to document and analyse the interannual variability of some WAM components having characteristic long time scales (ground water balance, vegetation dynamics, anthropic forcing).
    The Enhanced Observing Period (EOP, 2005-2007) is designed for a detailed documentation of the annual cycle of the surface and atmospheric parameters on convective to regional scales. The regional coverage is obtained through various actions including a restoration and upgrade of the operational networks, and the installation of specific new instruments deployed in networks. Added to this continental deployment are oceanic measurements carried out by a research vessel during two annual cruises; one in June and one in September of each EOP year.
    Satellite measurements are fundamental to cover the different space-time domains considered in AMMA, and establishing relationships with conventional data, field campaigns and modelling issues.

    General activities

      • Implementation and coordination of EOP and LOP activities;
      • Elaboration of satellite products validated with SOP, EOP and LOP observations.
