CC1: Climate modelling

    General objective

    Evaluation and Improvement of climate models over West Africa.

    This WG is concerned with the difficulty of current GCMs in simulating the observed tropical intra-seasonal variability. Improved knowledge of the physics gained in AMMA is used in the improvement of coupled and uncoupled GCMs. Observations are used to evaluate models and to improve model parametrizations. Regional climate models (stand alone and coupled systems) are considered for sensitivity studies.

    General activities

      • Inter-comparisons of models and with observations for detecting the main model’s deficiencies focussing on hydrological parameters and convection at seasonal and intra-seasonal time scales;
      • Evaluation of the different modelling components of the earth system (land, ocean, atmosphere, chemistry) by the analysis of coupled simulations;
      • Iidentification of the parametrization deficiencies and implementation of ad hoc experiments for improving them;
      • Sensitivity experiments to isolate important key physical processes on different time scales (since intra-seasonal to decadal).
